Detroit Renewable Energy Supports Green Living Science
Green Living Science Provides Environmental Education Programs for Detroit Students
Green Living Science (GLS), a nonprofit organization that teaches Detroit Public Schools (DPS) students about the importance of the environment and recycling, has received a sponsorship from Detroit Renewable Energy (DRE). DRE is a consortium of local renewable energy and distribution companies that provides the City of Detroit with safe, reliable, and cost-effective solutions for clean energy and waste disposal. The $5,000 sponsorship will be used to enhance Green Living Science’s curriculum that teaches DPS students how to transform Detroit neighborhoods through waste reduction, reuse, and recycling.
“Green Living Science and Detroit Renewable Energy share a common goal of teaching about the benefits of effective waste disposal in Detroit. This new partnership will help us develop additional educational materials, including hands-on lessons for Detroit students,” said Rachel Klegon, executive director of Green Living Science.
“Detroit Renewable Energy cares deeply about the community and is dedicated to promoting a future full of engaged, thoughtful young people in our city,” said Steven A. White, chairman and CEO of Detroit Renewable Energy. “We’re proud to support Green Living Science in its efforts to educate and inspire our local students.”
Since its formation in 2007, Green Living Science has brought environmental and recycling lessons to 40,000 Detroit students, which has expanded the use of curbside recycling in their Detroit neighborhoods. GLS works with students from kindergarten through the 8th grade, using lessons developed in conjunction with the DPS Office of Mathematics and Science. “When children learn how recycling can reduce trash, help the environment, and improve their neighborhoods, they take that lesson home and share it with their parents,” said Klegon.
Green Living Science’s Detroit office is located next to Recycle Here!, Detroit’s drop-off recycling center, and GLS staff and volunteers have led many school groups on tours of the recycling facility, as well as the adjacent Lincoln Street Art Park. Under GLS leadership, the Art Park was transformed from a vacant lot and dumping site into a community gathering space with artwork and furniture salvaged or created by local artists and volunteers.
